Research Support (RS) and Knowledge Exchange (KE) Professionals who are transitioning or intend to transition onto IP commercialisation roles within Research Support Office (RSO) or Technology Transfer Office (TTO) of a University often struggle to prepare Self alongside their current roles due to lack of mentors in guiding on IP exploitations aspect.
Such a situation faced by budding IP Commercialisation Professionals is partly due to the lack of training courses created with ‘an easy way of correlating the IP commercialisation course-contents to the existing background knowledge of KE professionals’ and ‘direct usability of the taught IP commercialisation skills/knowledge in a University environment (instead of being trained to be an IP Expert or IP Lawyer)’.
Individuals in Research Support (RS) and Knowledge Exchange (KE) support roles can learn how to become effective IP Commercialisation Professionals within the University environment by attending this intensive 1-day course. This course intends to demystify the IP basics of how to support a research/commercialisation project from the aspects of both IP Management and IP Exploitation (by building upon existing skills/experience of an individual in research support and knowledge exchange roles).
A professional staff in a TTO or a relevant ‘research and knowledge exchange support office’ of a University is usually required to advise a researcher/academic on ‘what comprises background and foreground IPs in a research project or grant proposal’, ‘how to identify relevant market/customer segments appropriate for the research idea/IP from exploitation aspect’, ‘how to identify existing prior arts for the consideration of IP protection and competitors’, ‘what support activities may be needed from the initial idea disclosure till the end point of securing a licence or spinout formation’, ‘basics of contractual terms adopted in licensing and spinout agreements’, and ‘engaging potential licensees and investors relevant to the University IPs’.

FAQs
Are training
contents relevant to 'research commercialisation support staffs and
institutions' outside of the UK?
Training
materials have been prepared in the context of undertaking research
commercialisation project support by staffs (esp. within the Research and
Knowledge Exchange Support Offices) in the UK's Higher Education landscape.
However, 99% of the course contents are applicable to non-UK working
environment (apart from slight differences in the norms/rules of funding and
governance mechanisms adopted for research commercialisation support).
How much
does a potential trainee need to know Intellectual Properties (IPs) prior to
attending this course?
As a minimum
expectation on the IP basic knowledge, the researcher/student ought to have
read the dictionary meaning of various IP types - Copyright, Design Rights
(Registered/Unregistered), Trademark, Confidentiality, Trade Secret, Patent.
However, there is an expectation that the potential trainee ought to possess a
reasonable knowledge on how various IP types relate to research projects or
innovative ideas.
Is 1-day
sufficient to empower an aspiring IP Commercialisation Professional on all
skillset aspect?
The Course
content and training approach focus mainly on 'the bigger picture logic of why'
and 'some readymade tips of using best practice approaches in IP
Management/Exploitation' for adoption by a Research or Knowledge Exchange
Support Staff upon 'an existing or upcoming research commercialisation
project'. The training contents of this course can be considered as reasonably
sufficient for an average-skilled staff currently in 'research and knowledge
exchange support roles' to move into the role of providing IP Commercialisation
support. Also, the course contents can be adopted by a junior-level IP
Commercialisation Staff aiming to become an IP Commercialisation
Professional/Expert. However, there is always some gap between learning and
executing. The trainee is recommended to read through 'freely available'
additional learning resources on IPs and IP exploitation for enhancing
knowledge/skills.
Can
Academics and Post Graduate (PG) Research Students also attend this course?
Yes, the course
contents and training approach have been designed with an aim to enable easy
understanding by a budding IP Commercialisation Professional, thereby the
terminologies and wordings used are the ones written from an early career staff
in technology transfer role. However, the course contents will be more relevant
to Staffs in Research Support Office (RSO) or Technology Transfer Office (TTO)
of various institutions, as they can directly consume the training contents
without much effort due to prior working experience in providing research or
knowledge exchange support.
