Overview:
Large, complex, or multi partner research projects (particularly those funded by EU programmes, UKRI, Innovate UK, or similar bodies) often require specialist support to manage intellectual property effectively. Funders frequently mandate the appointment of a dedicated Technology Transfer Manager to oversee background IP, arising IP, and the exploitation strategy for research outputs.
A ‘subcontracted’ Technology Transfer Manager can support the project by:
• Identifying and recording new inventions.
• Conducting basic prior art searches to assess patentability and understand the innovation landscape.
• Coordinating periodic IP management meetings across all project partners.
• Carrying out early stage market exploration to inform potential commercialisation routes.
• Ensuring compliance with funder and consortium IP terms and conditions.
• Managing confidentiality of arising IP while enabling academic dissemination and publications.
• Preparing a definitive list of arising IP for clarity among all collaborators at project close.
Research Support Offices or Technology Transfer Offices may also require temporary, flexible access to an experienced commercialisation professional. This is particularly useful when internal capacity is limited or when delivering time bound innovation programmes such as accelerators, spinout founder support schemes, market exploration initiatives, or proof of concept funding calls. Short term contracted support (e.g., 6–12 months) can provide an effective solution.
