Project Mentorship (5wk): Building ‘an MVP from Prototype’ with Design Skills

  • By - Ipcomadmin

Requirements

Snapshot Brief:

Researchers, Founders, KE Staffs can learn & build 'an MVP using Design skills' from existing Prototype for the purpose of market-launch specification.

Pre-Mentorship Kick-Off Meeting

1 hr max (Time-slot TBC)

Weekly Catch up Meeting [for 5-weeks]

1 hr max (Time-slot TBC)

Additional Info

A real ‘upcoming/ongoing’ new product/idea can be proposed for this Project Mentorship by the Mentee (esp. Researcher or Prospective Academic Founder or Research Support Staff or Knowledge Exchange Professional) who has a product design background/experience esp. on the engineering design tools/methodologies. A confidentiality agreement can be signed (if sought by the Mentee) prior to initiating this Project Mentorship between IP2Impact Ltd and the Mentee/Innovator, for maintaining confidentiality of the Mentee's proprietary trade secrets during and beyond the Online Mentorship tenure period. The Outputs from this Mentorship will comprise design files on the product (e.g. animated 3D product view, sketch, technical drawing), an excel file on Price/Cost estimation (for limited manufacturing), and a summary report DOC/PDF on the product design-plan. With the insights and skills acquired through this Mentorship tenure, the Mentee/Innovator can easily improve/adapt the market-analysis files to suit the needs of various versions of 'Product Proposition concepts'.

Description

‘Researchers, Innovators and Prospective Startup Founders’ intending to create a visually presentable Minimum Viable Product (MVP, esp. a physical device) with a clarity on ‘the list of required components for attempting a limited batch-manufacturing’ and ‘the mock price-cost analysis of creating and selling a viable market-ready product’ may avail this Online Mentorship.

This Project Mentorship is meant to empower the Mentee on ‘identifying the minimum required features mandatorily expected on a MVP’ and ‘coming up with a market-ready product through design exercises of the internal components and the product’s external aesthetic view (for an acceptable level of Consumer/User experience)’.

Hands-on learning approach through this Project Mentorship will be mainly useful to innovators/researchers, spinout/startup founders and Knowledge Exchange (KE) professionals who wish to conduct an exploratory exercise of presenting a visually appealing product with a clear customer value proposition to the intended target buyer/customer group. Creating a proper batch-manufacturing or large-scale product manufacturing requirement info may not be achieved from this Mentorship scheme, since the prior experience and skills of the Mentee/Innovator on product design and building engineering products will have a direct correlation to the quality of Mentorship outputs.

Availing service of a professional product design consultant or firm will incur a high cost to Innovators/startups, and it would be a struggle to find the money required for the product design task for a bulk manufacturing standard. Moreover, innovators are likely to fail in creating an aesthetically appealing product with a list of minimum required components, prior to engaging a professional product design consultant/firm or achieving a market-ready product manufacturing standard.

The unique difference of this 5-week Project Mentorship to the usual service of a professional design consultancy is the emphasis on ‘realising a workable MVP’ for testing the interest of investors and potential buyers/customers (at a minimum affordable cost), prior to looking for investments or hiring professional design firms to create a large-scale product manufacturing plan. This Project Mentorship may be considered as a hands-on training exercise of the Trainee on the ‘End-User Behavioural Analysis’ aspect by adopting ‘Design Skills & Methodologies’, instead of a directly engaging a Professional Product Design Consultant or firm to create a market-ready status of product launch.

Note: The Online Course titled “Self-Study Course (2hr): Building ‘an MVP from Prototype’ with Design Skills” offered by IP2Impact Ltd covers most of the conceptual aspects used in this Project Mentorship.

Outcomes

What You’ll Learn & Achieve From This Project Mentorship

  • Task-1-Output: Preparing possible aesthetic design looks of the product by comparing to competing products – Outward Looking
  • Task-2-Output: Working with product engineers of the Client to optimise internal engineering components and packaging – Inward Looking
  • Task-3-Output: Drafting a pre-production ready technical specification of the product - Inward Looking
  • Task-4-Output: Preparing marketing flyers and cost-price estimation of the product - Inward Looking
